Périgord Pourpre / Dordogne

Bergerac

The area is renowed for its gastronomic delights and foie gras. Duck, walnuts, prunes and rich wines feature in many recipes.

The historic town of Bergerac, set on the River Dordogne, in the center of the wine disctrict, has much to offer: museums, markets on Wednesday and Saturday, good restaurants serving traditional cuisine, pavement cafes and interesting shops within the old town.

The medieval Bastide town of Beaumont, Castillonnès, Eymet, Issigeac, and Monpazier with their weekly markets are close by; they offer restaurants to suit every budget and all tastes.

There are many exciting caves to visit including the well known caves of Lascaux with their fine examples of prehistoric cave paintings and artefacts.

The many beautiful Châteaux are worth visiting, Château Monbazillac with its famous sweet wine; the abandoned fairy tale Château Biron; Château Bridoire; magnificent Château Lanqais and Josephine Baker´s Château Les Milandes.

Walkers will find designated routes. For painters and photographers, there are many picturesqe views to capture, like the 12th century chapel of Monbos. You can visit the wine producers to taste and buy their wines or just ´relax´ with a good book by the pool.

In the village Bouniagues you will find a small general store for the daily shopping; a bakery and post office. Extensive shopping can be done in Eymet.
